Dr Laura Vella (PhD, The University of Melbourne) is Head of the Extracellular Vesicle Laboratory at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. She held postdoctoral positions at The University of Melbourne as a Viertel Foundation Research Fellow and The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at The Austin Hospital. Laura’s international reputation is built around her expertise in extracellular vesicles. She holds an internationally competitive fellowship from the Alzheimer's Association and is on the Scientific Advisory Board of biopharmaceutical company Exopharm. She leads a multidisciplinary research program focusing on Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons disease and the development of methods to isolate and study extracellular vesicles.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, membrane-bound vesicles found in all biofluids. They are a readily available source of disease and tissue-specific biomarkers and recognised as key mediators of intercellular communication due to their ability to traffic lipids, proteins and RNA between cells and tissues. Laura’s talk will cover her team's developments in isolating eukaryotic and prokaryotic EVs from various sources, the role of EVs in disease spread and pathogenesis, and the utility of EVs as a source of prodromal biomarkers of disease.

All welcome!
