Fungi – the flexible kingdom

Special seminar hosted by ANZAAS

Fungi are a separate, hyper-diverse kingdom of the natural world, more closely related to animals than to plants. In this talk, Dr May will explore fungal diversity, nutrition and lifecycles, with a focus on interactions with other organisms; to show that fungi are essential components of ecosystems, and that their biological properties make them excellent model organisms and also enable development of novel materials.

Dr Tom May is a Senior Research Scientist in Mycology at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, where his research interests include the evolution and ecology of larger fungi. He founded Fungimap, a citizen science initiative to map Australian fungi and is active in international committees on the conservation, nomenclature and taxonomy of fungi.
