WEHI offers an internationally respected PhD program as the Department of Medical Biology at the University of Melbourne. 

Our Scientific Education Office is available to advise and assist students with all stages of their application.

How to apply

Domestic (Australian citizen/Australian permanent resident/New Zealand citizen) and international students can apply to join our Medical Biology PhD Program.

Apply for a specific project

Both domestic and international students can apply to undertake PhD study as detailed below: first identify a PhD topic of interest, reach an agreement on a project with the prospective supervisors, and then apply for PhD candidature and a scholarship via the University of Melbourne.

Step 1: Finding a PhD project

Prospective PhD students should:

• Investigate available PhD research projects, new projects are listed each year from August

• Read widely about WEHI, including our research divisions, research fields, disease research and faculty

• Attend WEHI’s Student Open Day or other events to meet our researchers and students and see our world-class facilities

• Discuss scholarship opportunities with prospective supervisors: all PhD students must have a scholarship to support their PhD candidature

• After extended discussion and interview, confirm a project with the prospective supervisor and develop a 100 word research proposal.

Step 2: Applying for PhD candidature

Once a PhD project has been confirmed with a supervisor, propsective students should:

• Notify the Scientific Education Office of your intention to apply for PhD candidature and university scholarship
  • Forward information about your supervisor as well as your curriculum vitae (CV) and current academic transcript to education@wehi.edu.au
  • Be familiar with University of Melbourne PhD entry requirements
• Complete the University of Melbourne graduate research online application for PhD candidature admission (this application is also for applying for a university scholarship)
  • PhD candidature can be applied at any time of the year, however there are strict university scholarship application deadlines. The major round closes at the end of October. 
    Three smaller scholarship rounds are available with the final deadline at the end of May. 
  • In some situations, host laboratories may agree to award interim funding until an external scholarship is attained.
